CHINA on Thursday donated 35m/- ICT equipment to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) to support various activities including compiling reports of last year’s national census results.

Census Commissioner Anna Makinda said that the equipment, which include laptops, desktops and printers, would support the pace of data processing and displaying the 2022 National Housing and Population Census results on time.

“The equipment will help in data collection, processing and storing exercises,” said Ms Makinda.

According to her, the Chinese government last year donated tablets which eased the census processes.

The 2022 Census was the first to be conducted using state-of-the-art technology.

Zanzibar’s Census Commissioner, Mohamed Haji Hamza, said the donation not only signifies China and Tanzania’s friendship but also good cooperation between the two countries.

“The ICT equipment will help analysing information of each region, district, village and ward as the census enters its third phase,” Mr Hamza said.

Zanzibar’s Chief of Government Statistics Salim Kassim Ally said the ICT equipment will speed up the entire census process.

The Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Ms Chen Mingjian, said that the primary goal was to assist NBS to continue doing its noble role in generating various statistics which are important for promoting the right decisions.
