DAR ES SALAAM: IN what appears to be a major boost for vulnerable families, Chemba District Council has received a substantial subsidy of 2.7bn/- from the Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) between 2024 and 2025.

This funding aims to alleviate poverty and enhance the living standards of the district’s most needy households. For nearly 25 years, TASAF has been dedicated to lifting poor households out of poverty.

TASAF Coordinator in Chemba District, Simon Butondo unveiled the figures here when providing an implementation report for various projects being implemented by the fund.

According to him, out of the disbursed funds, 2.1bn/- were spent in providing subsidy for the needy families while 164.7m/- in supervision and operational costs by the District Council in the implementation of the projects.

The TASAF initiative, which has been instrumental in combating poverty in Tanzania for nearly 25 years, focuses on providing financial support and resources to households that are struggling to meet their basic needs.

According to Mr Butondo, the funds were primarily directed towards various social programmes, including cash transfers for the poorest households, education support for children, and initiatives to improve access to health services.

“A total of 6,990 households with 23,000 beneficiaries have received funds from these initiatives seeking to rescue families in the district from poverty,” he added.

He further said that Chemba District Council had implemented TASAF projects in all 114 villages, whereas until to date the district had only left with 4,116 households.

Speaking at the event, Chemba District Executive Director (DED), Hassan Mnyika, expressed the districts gratitude for this timely assistance, recognising it as a vital lifeline for families facing economic hardships.

The DED emphasised the importance of TASAF’s support in the fight against poverty in Chemba.

Mr Mnyika stated adding: “We are committed to ensuring that these resources are effectively utilised to benefit our community.”

Since its inception in 1999, TASAF has played a pivotal role in transforming the lives of millions of Tanzanians by providing them with the necessary tools to improve their economic situations.

The fund operates on the principle of promoting community participation, ensuring that beneficiaries are actively involved in decision-making processes that affect their lives.

With the new influx of funds, local officials are optimistic about making a tangible difference in the lives of Chemba’s most disadvantaged citizens.

The Chemba DED said his council plans to work closely with community-based organisations to ensure that the allocation of funds was transparent and reaches those who need it most.
