CHAN preps on track, host nations confirm

TANZANIA: THE host countries for the CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya have confirmed that preparations are progressing well, with final touches being made, including the establishment of the Local Organising Committees.

Top officials from Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya revealed this during a meeting on Wednesday in Kampala, Uganda.

The Tanzanian delegation was led by Minister for Culture, Arts and Sports Palamagamba Kabudi, Uganda by Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang and Kenya by Principal Secretary- State Department for Sports Peter Tum.

The officials met to finalise several key matters, including hosting agreements, government commitments, the structuring of Local Organising Committees (LOCs) and the transport, communication and infrastructure needed to support activities in the host countries.

Speaking after the meeting, Minister Kabudi expressed satisfaction with the discussions and the progress made by all three countries.

“We have been able to agree on a lot of matters, some of which were contentious, while others required clarity. Clarifications have been provided and now we are in agreement on what to do and how to conduct both the CHAN 2025 and AFCON 2027 finals,” said Kabudi.

Uganda’s Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang, underscored the region’s readiness, particularly in terms of infrastructure.

“In Tanzania today and tomorrow, from what we hear, East Africa is prepared on issues of infrastructure, so we are quite happy,” said Ogwang.

Kenya’s Principal Secretary- State Department for Sports, Peter Tum, highlighted the importance of intergovernmental cooperation to ensure the tournament meets high standards.

He further reiterated Kenya’s commitment to working with Uganda and Tanzania to secure funds and streamline travel logistics across the three nations.

“Our technical committee, chaired by the Permanent Secretary (PS) of Kenya, will work closely with our colleagues to ensure we have seamless travel funds for movement in and out of the three countries.

Fortunately, we also have all three airlines -Air Tanzania, Kenya Airways and Uganda Airlines— operating within East Africa’s skies,” said Tum.
