Chali claims first Panthers golf fiddle title

DAR ES SALAAM: YASMIN Chali made a strong impression at Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC), while newly co-opted Lady Captain Sue Van Zyl successfully hosted the first Pink Panthers Weekly Fiddle golf tournament at the club course in the city yesterday.

It has been a week since DGC Golf Section Captain, Mohamed Dewji and his committee co-opted Van Zyl to fill a key role among other officials.

Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) honorary secretary Chali led by example, rediscovering her swing to post an impressive two-under 38 Stableford points, securing the top prize in the 18-hole tournament.

Former TLGU Vice-President, Anita Siwale from Morogoro Gymkhana Club, followed with 33 points to claim second place, while Tamoko Miyamoto finished third with 29 points.

The winners were awarded prizes by Ladies’ Captain Van Zyl, marking her return to a section that had been relatively quiet for some time.

Speaking to the ‘Daily News’ after the tournament, Van Zyl expressed her excitement about hosting the event.

“I’m happy to say we had our first fiddle and the ladies delivered some really good scores. Unfortunately, one of our players (Beatrice Leto) suffered an injury, breaking her toe on tee box no. 9. We wish her a speedy recovery,” she said.

Leto early confirmed the injury, saying, “Bad news, I broke my last toe. Six weeks without golf or sports.” The latter thanked all the ladies for their very kind wishes…as many ladies joined the Lady Captain in sending her well wishes.

Van Zyl also shared promising news about future sponsorships.

“I’ve already spoken to some of my previous sponsors and they’re keen to support the ladies’ section again. One sponsor, whom I can’t name yet, has committed to backing competitions—we’re just waiting for final confirmation on the details,” she revealed.

She also expressed her ambition to revive the junior section and reintroduce competitions that support the community.

“As soon as I have all the details, I’ll share them. My goal is to make the ladies’ section great again,” she added.
