CCM picks Salema as candidate for EALA post

DODOMA: THE ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM)’s Parliamentarians committee meeting which met yesterday under chairmanship of Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa elected Ms Gladness Salema for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) post.

Out of the total 244 votes cast by the members of committee, Ms Salema obtained 139 votes.

Ms Salema who is a senior lecturer at University of Dar es salaam Business School (UDBS) is one of technical team members for drafting Tanzania Vision 2050.

Earlier when convincing the voters to vote for her, she said she is the person who understands well the nation’s priorities and where the country is going as well as vision of  Chama cha Mapinduzi.

“I know well the vision of Chama cha Mapinduzi and  I have the capacity to   integrate and support youths and women.

I believe I am the right candidate and a person of integrity and accountability who serves national development programmes such as agriculture,” said Ms Salema.

She said as to the geographical position she can take for the transformation agenda.

On Sunday, the party’s Extra Ordinary Central Committee approved the list of 10 party members 47 candidates who applied for the nomination.

The selected candidates included Gladness Salema, Maria Sebastian, Queenelizabeth Makune, Ester Chaula, Professor Neema Kumburu, Lucia Pande, Fatuma Kange, Hawa Mkwela, Fatma Msofe and Theresia Dominic.

Prime Minister Majaliwa said the name of Ms Salema will be submitted to the National Assembly on September 5th this year for voting.

The party’s process to pick the candidate followed the death of a Tanzanian representative to EALA, Dr Shogo Mlozi who died in June this year.

She unexpectedly passed on in the wee hours of Thursday the 13th June, 2024, at the Mount Meru Hospital in Arusha, Tanzania.

The late Dr Mlozi served her First Term as a member of EALA from Tanzania. She was a respected and esteemed young member of the Assembly and mostly known for her unwavering commitment to serving the people of East Africa.

Her passion in promoting unity and cooperation among the member states of the East African Community was evident in her work and advocacy within the Assembly and beyond.

Throughout her tenure, Dr Mlozi worked tirelessly to address key issues facing the region, including Economic Development, Trade and Regional Integration.
