CCM must reject divisions, says Mwinyi

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President and CCM National Vice-Chairman (Zanzibar), Dr Hussein Mwinyi, has called on party leaders to strengthen unity and solidarity within the ruling party, warning against divisive factional politics driven by personal interests.

Dr Mwinyi warned that some leaders, including Members of Parliament, representatives and councillors, were engaging in divisive factional politics to protect personal interests, a trend he said threatened CCM’s unity and stability.

He made the remarks yesterday during the continuation of his party-strengthening tour held at the Dr Mohamed Shein Hall of the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) in Tunguu, South Unguja Region.

Dr Mwinyi said it is normal in politics for groups to support different candidates during elections, but stressed that once elections are over and leaders are elected, such factions should be dissolved so that all members remain united under the elected leadership.

“CCM leaders must serve as examples in bringing members together rather than encouraging divisions that do not benefit the party,” he said.

H e also criticised the practice of some leaders providing gifts or assistance only to supporters while sidelining other members, saying the behaviour creates unnecessary complaints and internal conflicts.

“ For CCM to remain politically and economically strong, we must firmly reject divisive factions and continue to work together in unity,” Dr Mwinyi stressed.

Speaking about the purpose of the tour, he said it was intended to congratulate CCM leaders and members for the party’s landslide victory in the 2025 General Election.

Dr Mwinyi further said CCM should continue strengthening its economic base by attracting investors capable of establishing major development projects.

He noted that the party possesses valuable resources, including investment areas suitable for commercial buildings and tourism ventures.

He added that the time has come for CCM to embrace economic transformation in line with successful liberation movements and allied parties around the world, including the African National Congress (ANC).

In another development, Dr Mwinyi announced that the government plans to construct a modern four-lane road from Tunguu to Makunduchi to boost economic growth and expand employment and business opportunities for residents of South Unguja Region.

He also said the government is working to address the shortage of clean and safe water in the region through expansion of the main water distribution network.

Dr Mwinyi pledged that during his second term he would continue implementing all development commitments outlined in the CCM 2025/2030 Election Manifesto.

“Development is not only about infrastructure, but also about people. That is why the government has increased the minimum wage from 300,000/- to 500,000/- to improve the living standards of citizens,” he said.

He added that the government also plans to increase allowances for elderly citizens in line with the country’s economic growth.

Dr Mwinyi stressed that all promises made during the previous election campaign would be fulfilled to ensure CCM enters the 2030 General Election stronger and better positioned for victory.

He also urged CCM Ethics Committees at all levels to carry out their responsibilities in accordance with party rules and procedures, instead of waiting until election periods to take action against members.

Meanwhile, CCM Zanzibar Deputy Secretary General, Mohamed Said Dimwa, said effective implementation of the party’s election manifesto has remained a key pillar of national development.

Dr Dimwa described President Mwinyi as a visionary, hardworking and principled leader whose performance continues to deliver sustainable development to the people.

On his part, Acting CCM Chairman for South Unguja Region, Abdallah Mwinyi Hassan, said party members in the region are proud of the major development achievements realised over the past five years.

He noted that the current priority is to continue strengthening the party strategically in ideological, economic and political terms while preserving unity and solidarity among members.
