CCM lays, reaffirms commitment to democracy
DODOMA: TANZANIA, through the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has reaffirmed its commitment to democratic governance, peaceful political participation and respect for the rule of law.
CCM Secretary-General, Dr AshaRose Migiro, made the remarks in Dodoma on Wednesday during talks with the United Nations Special Representative to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU), Ambassador Parfait Onanga-Anyanga.
Ambassador Onanga-Anyanga is based in Addis Ababa and is currently visiting Tanzania as the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres.
His visit forms part of consultations with national stakeholders on the political outlook following the October 29, 2025 General Election, as well as broader efforts aimed at strengthening peace, democracy and national unity in the country.
During the discussions, Dr Migiro reaffirmed Tanzania’s longstanding commitment to democratic governance and the rule of law, noting that the country continues to be guided by the principles of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance as well as international standards set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

She also highlighted legal reforms undertaken within the country’s electoral framework, including the enactment of new electoral laws in 2024 and measures aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the electoral process.
The talks also addressed incidents of violence reported in some parts of the country during and after the elections, which resulted in loss of life and damage to property, including attacks on CCM offices.
It was noted that appropriate measures had been taken to restore peace and stability. Both sides stressed the importance of continued dialogue and reconciliation among national stakeholders.
Dr Migiro also assured the UN envoy that Tanzania would continue to work closely with the international community to promote peace, security, and inclusive development.
