CAWM-Mweka unveils plan to meet job demand in tourism

THE College of Africa Wildlife Management Mweka (CAWM-Mweka) in Kilimanjaro Region has added new seven academic programmes in a bid to meet the job market demand in the tourism industry.
The CAWM-Mweka Deputy Rector (Academic Research and Consultancy) Prof Alex Kisingo said during the college’s directive seminar for the new students, the college had reviewed its curricular to make sure it was in line with job demands in the market after conducting a training needs assessment.
“After recognising the importance of trained leaders in managing wildlife and tourism institutions as well as increasing productivity in research, the college has also introduced new educational programmes including those at the Masters level,” he said.
In ensuring that (CAWM-Mweka) provides training that ensures excellence in the relevant fields, the college management has planned to improve the teaching tools in parallel with the teaching infrastructure in general.
“This includes the establishment of a Taxidermy Workshop, increasing the number of classrooms including the construction of new lecture halls, lecture halls for training through cinemas and laboratories as well as enabling the Information Technology (IT) and the building of modern toilet facilities at Kwakuchinja campus,” he noted.
For his part, the CAWM-Mweka Rector Prof Jafari Kideghesho said the number of students at the college has increased from 25 students 59 years ago to 900 in the 2020/2021 academic year.
“This numbers of admitted students continue to grow every year because of the courses which we continue to add; the college started providing certificates and diploma courses training and later on introduced degree courses in 2011 which involved Bachelor of Arts (BA) programmes in wildlife management and BA programme in tourism, hence the increasing numbers of students every year,” he noted.
Speaking during the occasion, the Moshi District Commissioner Mr Abbas Kayanda hailed the college management for the improvements that will increase the number of students admitted to the college every year.
“May I take this opportunity to congratulate you for establishing new campuses, which will improve and increase the curriculum at the college and reflect its status as a centre of excellence in wildlife management and the tourism sector-related activities in general,” he said.
He urged the new students to ensure that they focus on their studies seriously so that the nation continues to get more specialists in wildlife management and the tourism sector in general.
