CAIMSA unveil plans to establish modern AI Data Centre

DODOMA: The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Multidisciplinary Solutions in Africa (CAIMSA) has announced its vision to establish a state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence Data Centre.
This critical centre has been envisioned to address one of the continent’s most pressing barriers to AI development: limited access to high-performance computing infrastructure.
The proposed AI Data Centre will provide advanced Graphics Processed Units (GPU) computing resources, high-speed Internet connectivity, reliable power infrastructure and secure data storage.
Speaking in Dodoma recently, CAIMSA Chief Executive Officer Mr. Baraka Matinde reiterated that Africa’s greatest resources are not only its minerals or natural wealth but rather, it is the creativity, resilience and talent of its young people.
“But, many brilliant innovators are held back by limited access to computing infrastructure… through this AI Data Centre, we want to remove these barriers and create an environment where every young African researcher, entrepreneur and innovator should have ability to build globally competitive AI solutions from Africa, for Africa,” he said.
He added that this investment is about empowering the next generation to transform ideas into impactful businesses, create jobs and drive sustainable economic growth across the continent.
Moreover, he disclosed that the centre will necessitate AI research environments to support universities, startups, innovators, governments, and industry across Africa.
The initiative seeks to reduce the cost of developing and deploying AI solutions while strengthening Africa’s capacity to build technologies tailored to local challenges and opportunities.
However, he noted despite remarkable progress in AI research and innovation across the continent, many African researchers and startups continue to face significant constraints due to the high cost and limited availability of computing resources.
“Access to GPUs, stable Internet connectivity and reliable electricity remains a major obstacle to training modern AI models, conducting advanced research, and commercializing locally developed innovations.
“As such, CAIMSA’s proposed investment aims to bridge this infrastructure gap and contribute to a more inclusive and self-reliant African AI ecosystem,” Mr Matinde said.
The AI Data Centre is envisioned as a collaborative platform that will support multidisciplinary research, entrepreneurship, workforce development, AI commercialization, and regional partnerships while positioning Africa to contribute more actively to the global artificial intelligence landscape.
The initiative aligns with CAIMSA’s broader mission of advancing artificial intelligence through research, innovation, entrepreneurship, capacity building, and strategic partnerships that address Africa’s development priorities.
By investing in foundational digital infrastructure, CAIMSA seeks to create an enabling environment where African innovation can flourish and where locally developed AI technologies can compete on the global stage.
