CAF increases CHAN 2024 prize money by 75 per cent

CAIRO, EGYPT: THE Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant increase in the prize money for the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to be held across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The winner of the tournament will now receive $3.5 million, marking a 75 per cent increase in the prize fund.

In addition, the total prize pool for CHAN 2024 has been raised to $10.4 million, a 32 per cent increase compared to previous editions.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe expressed his excitement about the upcoming tournament, stating: “We are thrilled about the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship and we have significantly boosted the prize money for the winner to $3.5 million, an increase of 75 per cent.”

He added: “The total prize money for the tournament has also been raised to $10.4 million, a 32 per cent increase.

CHAN is vital for the development and growth of African football, offering opportunities to showcase talented, Africa-based players.

Motsepe emphasised that CHAN tournament is part of CAF’s broader strategy to invest in African football, elevating its status and making it more appealing to fans, sponsors and global stakeholders.

“By nurturing talent, improving infrastructure and highlighting the vibrancy of African football, we aim to create a deeper connection with the sport and generate excitement at every level,” he said.

CHAN 2024 will kick off on Saturday, February 1, 2025, with the final match scheduled for Friday, February 28, 2025.

So far, 17 countries have qualified for the tournament, including the hosts Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, as well as Morocco, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, Sudan, Zambia, Angola and Madagascar.

Two additional teams will qualify through the remaining matches. The revamped prize structure reflects CAF’s commitment to investing in the future of African football and making CHAN competition one of the premier events on the continent’s sporting calendar.
