BRELA puts dormant firms on notice

DAR ES SALAAM: A TOTAL of 5,277 companies face possible removal from Tanzania’s Companies Register after failing to confirm their business status, with the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA) giving them 90 days to respond.

According to a BRELA notice published in the Government Gazette on September 18, 2026, the affected companies have 90 days to lodge an objection before the Registrar proceeds with the proposed strike-off.

The notice, issued under Section 403(3) of the Companies Act, Cap. 212, gives the companies, their directors, shareholders and company secretaries a final opportunity to respond before any removal from the register.

BRELA said the latest notice follows two earlier notices issued in 2022, through which the Registrar asked the affected companies to confirm whether they were still carrying on businesses.

The first notice was published on June 2, 2022, while the second was issued on July 13, 2022. The latest action therefore gives the companies a final window to demonstrate that they remain operational or lodge an objection before the Registrar proceeds with the proposed strike-off.

If no objection is received within the 90-day period, the Registrar will proceed with the process of striking the companies off the Companies Register, according to the notice.

The names of the 5,277 companies are contained in a schedule accompanying the Government Gazette notice.

The exercise highlights the importance of corporate compliance and maintaining accurate business records, particularly for companies seeking financing, investment, licences and commercial partnerships.

For investors, lenders, suppliers and other businesses, an up-to-date Companies Register provides important information for due diligence when assessing potential business partners.

However, the proposed action does not necessarily mean that all the listed companies have ceased operations. Rather, BRELA’s notice indicates that the companies were previously asked to confirm their business status and are now being given a final opportunity to object.
