BoT urged to help people with disabilities in identifying counterfeit notes

TANGA: TANGA Regional Commissioner, Dr. Batilda Burian, has urged the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) to continue raising public awareness—particularly among people with special needs—on how to identify counterfeit banknotes, to help them avoid challenges that may arise due to a lack of proper information.

Dr. Batilda appealed to her representative, Acting Regional Administrative Secretary of Tanga, Mr. Sebastian Masanja, during the official opening of a special training session on counterfeit currency detection for individuals with hearing impairments (the deaf), held in the region.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Masanja noted that if this group receives adequate education, it can significantly contribute to national efforts aimed at eradicating counterfeit money and help individuals avoid unknowingly getting into legal or financial trouble.

“This knowledge they have received should be used to help others with special needs, who represent a large portion of the community. When awareness reaches the wider population, the issue of counterfeit currency can be reduced or even eliminated,” said Masanja.

On his part, BoT Public Relations Officer, Mr. George Hela Hela, explained that the central bank has been offering this type of training regularly to various groups across the country as part of its ongoing efforts to combat the circulation of fake currency and improve financial literacy among Tanzanians.

He emphasized that BoT will continue working closely with the community to ensure every Tanzanian is well-informed on how to distinguish genuine banknotes from fake ones, to safeguard the national economy and protect citizens’ rights.
