BoT governor stresses employees’ skills sharpening
EMPLOYERS in the country have been urged to fulfill their responsibilities of sharpening skills of their employees so that they can meet their employers’ expectations.
Bank of Tanzania (BoT) Governor, Professor Florence Luoga said that the employers should not shun the responsibilities, because higher learning institutions produce graduates in various fields but they need to undergo capacity building so that they can deliver as expected by employers.
Prof Luoga made the call in Dar es Salaam on Thursday during a climax of the University of Dar es Salaam’s 60th anniversary.
“I urge employers from public and private institutions and when they employ various graduates such as engineers or accountants they should first sharpen their skills so that they can be familiar with various procedures and other important things so that they can perform well,” he said.
Prof Luoga noted that BoT is one of the biggest consumers of UDSM graduates such as economists and other professionals such as accountants, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), who are young people,” said Prof Luoga.
He said that every year the central bank was losing about 50 staff who are retiring according to the law.
“I have to go to the university and take young people. I told my colleagues that when we hire, for example, economists, accountants or engineers, we do not expect them to be able to do our jobs for the central bank like those who have retired because they do not know the bank well, they must first undergo training so as to serve the institution better,” he said.
He said the institutions produce graduates who have great potential because they have been prepared so that they can be shaped and work efficiently.
Prof said the BoT currently has ICT experts who have enabled the government to save more than 30m/- by not buying ICT systems from abroad.
“Initially we talked to experts in abroad so that they could build the system at the cost of 30m/- but they gave us conditions including using their own experts we decided to abandon them and use our young ICT experts who have succeeded to install the system,” he said.
Furthermore, Prof Luoga said BOT in collaboration with UDSM expects to offer a short course in the financial sector.
On his part the UDSM Vice Chancellor, Prof William Anangisye said that in marking the climax of the 60th anniversary, their responsibility is to ensure they continue to be a prestigious university that focuses on academic principle.
Prof Anangisye said during the one year celebration the college planned to implement many things and others to give back to the community where they had a successful year in carrying out those tasks they set for themselves.
