BMH specialists perform 64 surgeries; attend 810 patients during their Malawian tour

MALAWI: TANZANIAN specialists from Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (BMH) have performed 64 surgeries and attended to more than 810 patients during a medical camp in Malawi, strengthening healthcare cooperation between the two countries.
The camp, which began on September 28, 2026, concluded with 49 patients referred to Benjamin Mkapa Hospital in Dodoma for further treatment.
Tanzania’s Ambassador to Malawi, Agnes Kayola, said the initiative had benefited patients while providing an opportunity for healthcare professionals from both countries to exchange knowledge and experience.
“The camp has benefited more than 810 patients, with 64 undergoing surgery and 49 referred to Benjamin Mkapa Hospital. It has also enabled healthcare professionals from the two countries to learn from one another and exchange professional experience,” she said.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Malawi’s Ministry of Health and Sanitation Principal Secretary for Administration, Bestone Chisamile, said the camp demonstrated the practical benefits of Tanzania-Malawi healthcare cooperation.

He said discussions had begun on formalising broader cooperation covering medical services, professional training, medicines and patient referrals.
“The cooperation between Malawi and Tanzania is being implemented through specialist medical camps in Malawi. However, we have started discussions that will examine the benefits of these camps to patients and the importance of formalising broader cooperation,” Mr Chisamile said.
He added that specialists from Tanzania had brought expertise in various medical fields and exchanged knowledge with their Malawian counterparts at Mzuzu Hospital in Mzuzu and Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe.
The initiative was implemented through cooperation involving BMH, SOTAC and the Medical Stores Department (MSD).
The team used modern mobile surgical vehicles equipped with operating theatres, enabling specialists to provide surgical services in different settings.
