BMH performs first high-tech brain surgery

DODOMA: BENJAMIN Mkapa Hospital (BMH) in Dodoma has successfully performed a groundbreaking brain surgery using sound wave technology.

A neurosurgeon at the hospital and the leader of the surgical team, Dr Maxigama Ndosi, announced in Dodoma that they had successfully treated a patient with a brain haemorrhage using ultrasound waves, effectively removing all the accumulated blood.

“For the first time, Benjamin Mkapa Hospital has introduced the use of ultrasound waves for brain surgery to remove blood clots and tumours through High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU). This technology allows for a minimal incision on the head, leaving only a small scar that heals quickly,” said Dr Ndosi.

The surgeon explained that the use of sound wave technology would significantly reduce the duration of brain surgeries, particularly for patients with brain bleeds and tumours.

“This technology, known as intraoperative ultrasound neuronavigation, enhances brain surgery procedures, whether for the removal of blood clots, cancerous tumours, or other conditions. It also improves efficiency in performing any type of brain surgery,” Dr Ndosi elaborated.

He added that this advanced technology will now be used at BMH to boost the efficiency of surgeries involving the removal of blood clots or various types of brain tumours.

“This means that any patient who comes to BMH with such conditions will benefit from this advanced expertise. With ultrasound-assisted brain surgery technology, BMH will remain at the forefront of performing these operations with greater efficiency,” he said.

Dr Ndosi also expressed his gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for equipping BMH with state-of-the-art medical equipment and specialists, which has greatly improved healthcare services for both Tanzanians and international patients.

Dr Kelvin Noel, from BMH’s Neurosurgery Department, shared details of the surgery, explaining that after receiving the patient, medical examinations revealed that the patient, in addition to suffering a stroke, had a severe brain haemorrhage that could have been life-threatening if not treated promptly.

The medical team decided to use sound wave technology to perform the surgery, successfully removing 120 millilitres of accumulated blood from the patient’s brain.

A relative of the patient, Mr Issa Kassimu expressed his gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for improving healthcare services with modern medical equipment and skilled specialists.

He also thanked Benjamin Mkapa Hospital for the comprehensive treatment provided to their patient
