MTWARA: DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr Doto Biteko, has called on graduates to apply the knowledge and skills they acquired during their studies to make informed decisions and address the challenges they encounter as they transition into the next phase of their lives.
Dr Biteko made the remarks during the 13th Graduation Ceremony of Stella Maris College, a constituent college of St Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT), which took place over the weekend in Mtwara Region.
In his address, Dr Biteko congratulated the graduates for successfully completing their studies and urged them to use the knowledge they have gained to solve real-world challenges.
He acknowledged that many graduates often face uncertainty about their future, particularly regarding the next steps after graduation.
“Some of you may be wondering, ‘What comes after graduation?’ and ‘Which path should I take?’ You may even feel that the future looks uncertain. However, remember, everyone has his/her own journey,” Dr Biteko remarked.
“Stay unique and make the right decisions based on the knowledge you’ve gained. A certificate alone doesn’t guarantee knowledge, so continue learning from those who have gone before you.”
The Deputy Prime Minister also addressed the issue of negativity that many graduates face, particularly from those who might seek to undermine their confidence.
He encouraged graduates to disregard such voices and remain focused on their goals.
“Don’t listen to those who try to discourage you or break your spirit. Instead, adhere to the law, act justly and support one another, both socially and psychologically,” he added.
Dr Biteko emphasised the importance of being prepared for the challenges of a rapidly changing world, including global competition, technological advancements and the impacts of climate change, such as rising temperatures, cyclones, droughts and earthquakes.
He also commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government for its ongoing efforts to support the private sector, particularly in advancing education and other sectors critical to national development.

“The government’s support is helping to advance education and contributing to the country’s overall growth,” he stated.
The Board Chairperson of Stella Maris College, Bishop Titus Mdoe, also expressed gratitude to the government for its approval, guidance and support, which has contributed to the college’s success in achieving its educational goals.
Representing the Chancellor of St Augustine University, Bishop Wolfgang Pisa, Bishop Mdoe further appealed to the government to continue supporting students at Stella Maris College, helping them overcome the challenges they face during their studies.
Father Prof Thadeus Mkamwa, the Principal of Stella Maris College, highlighted that the institution provides students not only with academic knowledge but also with practical skills.
This, he said, ensures that graduates are well-prepared to tackle various challenges in their professional lives. The college also focuses on character building, instilling values such as love, patience and creativity.
A total of 581 students graduated, representing 83 per cent of eligible graduates. However, 117 students were unable to graduate due to financial challenges, including an inability to pay tuition fees.
