Binti Marathon 2025 puts focus on menstrual hygiene

MTWARA: PREPARATIONS are already underway for the 2025 Run for Binti Marathon that will take place during Menstrual Hygiene Week, set to climax on May 28th, amplifying the event’s message of health, education and environmental sustainability.

The marathon, an annual charity event that focuses on improving marginalised communities, has been a major success for three consecutive years and next year’s initiative promises to make an even greater impact.

The 2025 Edition will continue to address crucial issues in Mtwara, such as menstrual health, gender equality and environmental conservation, while further promoting sustainable practices and inclusive growth.

As part of the on-going efforts, the marathon will bring together key stakeholders, including corporate sponsors, local communities, and development partners, to help improve the living conditions of students and their families.

This year’s event, held at Mnyawi Secondary School, Mnyawi Village in Nanyamba Town Council of Mtwara Region saw the construction of modern latrines, the distribution of over 200 reusable sanitary pads to female students and the planting of 100 trees as part of a wider environmental conservation push.

The event also featured important educational sessions on topics such as gender-based violence, financial literacy, reproductive health and clean energy, ensuring that both students and the local community were empowered with crucial knowledge for sustainable living.

The Director of Run for Binti, Flora Njelekela, expressed pride in the accomplishments of the 2024 marathon, stating: “This year we have made lasting improvements in Mnyawi, with the construction of new latrines and tree planting efforts. We’re looking forward to next year’s marathon, where we will continue our focus on menstrual health, gender equality and building a healthier future.” Njelekela commended the 2025 marathon partners; Stanbic Bank Tanzania, Marie Stopes Tanzania, Girl Guides Tanzania and Smile for Community, who expressed commitment to support the initiatives through funding, resources and educational outreach.

Mtwara District Commissioner, Abdallah Mwaipaya reiterated the importance of the marathon’s ongoing impact, emphasising the need for continued investment in local communities to drive long-term change.

“The Run for Binti Marathon is doing more than just improving infrastructure. It’s empowering communities to take control of their future, especially women, through education and health initiatives,” he remarked.
