TANZANIA: THE recent passing of Lawrence Mafuru (52), a distinguished Tanzanian public servant and leader, has left the nation in deep mourning.

Speaking during the government funeral service, The Tanzania Bankers Association (TBA) Chairman and the National Bank of Commerce (NBC) Bank, Managing Director, Theobald Sabi said the Tanzanian banking industry and its development over recent decades owe much to leaders who have championed growth and innovation, saying among such figures, late Mafuru stands out as a paragon of leadership whose legacy provides essential lessons for the youth and aspiring professionals in the country.
Mr Sabi said Mafuru’s career in the banking sector was marked by milestones that redefined the industry. During his tenure at NBC, he was instrumental in modernizing banking through the adoption of new technologies.
“These advancements not only improved banking services but also set the stage for a future where the sector could thrive and adapt in a rapidly changing economic landscape,” he said.
He said one of Mafuru’s most enduring impacts was his commitment to nurturing talent.
Under his influence, the financial sector in Tanzania saw a significant shift, with more than 90 per cent of senior leadership positions eventually being filled by local professionals.

Late Mafuru’s leadership was not just defined by his achievements but also by his character.
