TANZANIA Golf Union (TGU) has started to work the talk in supporting and developing the ladies with the decision to increase the number of prizes for them in the national level competitions starting with the Arusha Golf Open 2023.
The national-level Arusha Open is scheduled to tee off on July 15th and 16th this year at Arusha Gymkhana Club (AGC) course.
Jointly organised by hosts AGC and TGU, the event brings together top men and ladies from across the country.
TGU Chairman Gilman Kasiga confirmed to the ‘Daily News’ over the weekend that they have decided to increase the values of prizes for the ladies’ category from an initial two now to five and for the first time they will start in this year’s Arusha Open.
The 360-hole stroke play competition is sponsored by Reliance Insurance Company (Tanzania) Ltd.
“We have increased the prize to five from two. Later it will be more than five. It is essential for us to do this as we appreciate ladies’ efforts and we intend to continue supporting them,” he said.
TGU recently said that they are preparing a five-year strategic plan that aims to develop further the game while heavily focusing on developing junior ranks and increasing the number of lady golfers in the country.
Ladies have been a long cry for the increase in a number of prizes in men’s tournaments and now the matter has been resolved.
Queen Siraki, the President of the Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) has complimented TGU for the productive changes.
“It is good news for the ladies as they have listened to our requests and we have been told that the prizes have been increased to five (5) from two (2)!
“This is good news to us as ladies and a good start due to the fact that we dedicate ourselves to this game and bring a lot of recognition to the country and our clubs,” stressed Siraki.
The TLGU president has encouraged ladies to turn up in big numbers during the tournament.
“So, let’s not plan to miss this tournament in Arusha this week,” she said.
Top junior golfers like Tanzania People’s Defense Forces (TPDF) Lugalo golf club’s Isihaka Daudi, Jay Natwani, Prabvir Singh, Ally Mcharo, George Sembi of TPC Moshi and Morogoro Gymkhana’s Seif Mcharo will compete for the event’s top honour.
