Benjamin Mkapa Stadium upgrade: A crucial step toward AFCON 2027 success

DAR ES SALAAM: AFTER major renovations were carried out in other areas of the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, another major task to upgrade the playing field has finally begun in order to meet the standards required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for next year’s AFCON finals, which are being co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda through their joint collaboration (Pamoja Bid).

Currently, other areas of the Mkapa Stadium have become more attractive. Major renovations have been done, including the installation of new seats and the upgrading of changing rooms.

According to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Gerson Msigwa, the work is progressing well and the expectation is to see it completed on time so that it is ready for use for the AFCON finals. Indeed, this is an important step to be taken during this final preparation period for the finals, which will be held starting June, 2027.

Congratulations to the Ministry and its various stakeholders for achieving this upgrade, which involves excavating and removing the current soil in order to prepare the stadium afresh and give it greater capacity to prevent waterlogging.

And all this is being done at the most appropriate time because it is only a short while since the CAF Secretary General, Amos Adam, met with top leaders of the Ministries overseeing sports in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda where, undoubtedly, among the issues discussed were these AFCON preparations, with the aim of ensuring the finals are held to the highest standard.

IT IS ESSENTIAL As Tanzania accelerates preparations for the historic 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) under the Pamoja AFCON bid, the decision to upgrade the playing surface at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium is not just timely it is essential.

This moves signals Tanzania’s commitment to meeting the strict standards set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and ensuring a successful tournament alongside co-hosts Kenya and Uganda.

It’s well known that, The Benjamin Mkapa Stadium is Tanzania’s flagship football venue, state of the art boasting a capacity of 60,000 seats, making it one of the largest stadiums in Africa. For AFCON 2027, this stadium is expected to host major matches, including potentially high-profile group games or knockout fixtures. However, CAF’s requirements for hosting are extremely demanding, including highquality hybrid pitches. CAF has already emphasised the need for pitch reconstruction.

A lot has already been done to meet the required standards, thus playing area renovation is a non-negotiable step. Maybe someone can ask – why is this upgrade so important? There is a plethora of reasons, including the need to meet CAF standards.

AFCON is Africa’s biggest football tournament and only stadiums that meet CAF’s standards are approved to host matches. Upgrading the playing surface ensures the stadium meets international expectations for player safety and match quality.

The Pamoja concept meaning “together” in Swahili represents unity among the three host nations. This is the first time in history that East Africa will host AFCON and it is also one of the few times three countries co-host the tournament.

That means: Each country’s readiness affects the others. Weak preparation in one nation could affect the entire tournament. By upgrading Mkapa Stadium, Tanzania strengthens not only itself but the entire East African bid. Time is critical. CAF has already begun inspections across the three host nations, with officials assessing readiness in various areas including pitches.

This means, every delay matters. Every upgrade must meet global standards. Every decision now determines success in 2027. Upgrading the playing area of Benjamin Mkapa Stadium is not just a routine renovation it is a strategic move that defines Tanzania’s readiness for AFCON 2027.
