BASATA applauds efforts to promote taarab music
DAR ES SALAAM: THE National Arts Council (BASATA) has commended the Tanzania Taarab Music Association for its dedicated efforts in promoting and advancing the Taarab music genre in the country.
The recognition was given by BASATA’s Director of Arts Development and Promotion, Edward Buganga, following a meeting held at the council’s offices.
Buganga highlighted the significant contributions made by Taarab musicians in preserving and modernising the genre while ensuring its sustainability for future generations.
Buganga stated that Taarab music remains an essential part of Tanzania’s cultural heritage and has continued to evolve while maintaining its traditional essence.
He added that Taarab music is not just entertainment; it is a reflection of the country’s history, culture and values.

“As BASATA, we recognise the hard work and dedication of our Taarab artists and we assure you that we will continue to support your growth through policies, programmes and initiatives aimed at promoting this beautiful art form. It is our responsibility to provide a conducive environment where musicians can thrive, showcase their talents and contribute to the creative industry’s overall development,” he said.
He urged stakeholders in the music industry to support taarab artists by creating more platforms for performances, capacity-building programmes and digital exposure to reach wider audiences.
“The changing dynamics of the music industry, incorporating modern production techniques and marketing strategies would help elevate taarab music to greater heights,”
“Taarab music blends Swahili poetic lyrics with melodic influences from the Arab world and the Indian Ocean region, remaining a cherished art form in Tanzania. Its development has been instrumental in defining the country’s musical identity and efforts to support its growth continue to gain momentum,” he concluded.
