EASTC marks Diamond Jubilee with a call to value data efficiency

DAR ES SALAAM: THE East African Statistical Center (EASTC) has insisted on appropriate data usage during the General Elections as the college marks its 60th anniversary this week.
The college has urged Tanzanian journalists to focus on the statistics and data to present information in an easy-to-understand manner to the public, especially during this election period.
Speaking today, September 1, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, the college’s Head, Dr. Tumaini Katunzi, said they have provided training to Tanzanian journalists as part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the college, which was established in 1965, with tomorrow being the culmination.

“You learn to write statistical reports and process them to explain information through data, and in this, there has been a lot of distortion, and sometimes it is because people do not understand statistics, and statistics is a profession not everyone knows.
He added, “There is a difference between numbers and statistics, so be careful it will increase your skills when reporting your work,” he stressed
For his part, the Chairman of the board and the Administrator of the college, Prof. Ahmed Mohamed, said that currently the use of statistics is extensive, citing the example of the Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) meeting, where they used statistics when explaining the development of the five years in simple language using pictures and graphs.
