Amref launches Afya Thabiti Project to combat HIV/AIDS infection

SIMIYU: THE Amref Health Africa Tanzania organisation has launched the Afya Thabiti project which aims to combat the infection of the AIDS virus.

This project will be implemented in Simiyu, Mara and Zanzibar regions.

The project is implemented for a period of five years from October 01, 2023 to September 2028, under the funding of the emergency plan of the President of the United States to fight AIDS (PEPFAR) through the American organisation for disease control and prevention (CDC Tanzania).

Resident Director of Amref Tanzania, Dr Florence Temu, speaking at the launch of the project in Simiyu Region, said that the main goals of the project are to increase the fight against AIDS.

Dr Temu said that Afya Thabiti aimed to help the government achieve its goals of providing quality health services to its citizens, especially to those living with HIV and AIDS in order to join international efforts to fight the disease.

The director said that the project also aims to increase Tanzania’s efforts in achieving the global goals of controlling HIV and AIDS, which are 95, 95, 95.

“Through this project, we will achieve the global goals of 95, 95, 95, which is 95 per cent of people living with HIV knowing their condition, 95 per cent of those who know their condition should be on treatment and 95 per cent of those on treatment to eradicate the virus from their bodies,” he said Dr Temu.

He said that under the project, some of whose activities have started to be implemented from October, 2023, expects to provide various jobs for health service providers at various levels in Simiyu and Mara regions.

He also added that a total of 225 health service centres for both regions will be reached by the project, while more than 500,000 people who are the target of the project are expected to be reached. The Director of projects from the American organisation for disease control and prevention (CDC Tanzania) Dr George Mgomella said that the project will cost more than 40bn/- annually in its implementation.

He said that the CDC’s expectation is to see great efforts directed at preventing new infections of the disease, including the effective implementation of the global goals of 95,95,95.

“We are grateful to the government of Tanzania for continuing the fight against AIDS, in the global goals, on the first goal Tanzania has 83 per cent, the second goal is 98 per cent and the third goal is 94 per cent,” said Dr Mgomella.
