DAR ES SALAAM: The Attorney General Hamza Saidi Johari on Thursday joined hundreds of Muslim customers at an Iftar event hosted by the National Bank of Commerce (NBC) in Dar es Salaam, emphasizing the need for financial institutions to respect religious and cultural values.
Speaking at the gathering, which included religious leaders, government officials, and NBC patrons, Johari highlighted the role of banks in accommodating the diverse beliefs of their clientele. He praised NBC’s efforts to foster inclusivity and strengthen relationships with stakeholders.
“NBC’s commitment to engaging with different communities and respecting their principles is commendable,” Johari said. “Financial institutions must recognize and honor the values of all their customers.”
The event was also attended by NBC Managing Director Theobald Sabi and other senior bank representatives. NBC officials reiterated the bank’s dedication to serving all customers while aligning with ethical and religious considerations.
He noted that such efforts not only strengthen relationships but also encourage customers who may be hesitant to engage with financial institutions out of concern that their beliefs may be compromised.
“These relationships contribute to a more inclusive economy, positioning banks as vital partners for customers-not solely in safeguarding their financial assets, but also in providing a supportive environment where they can engage in matters related to their faith. Moreover, customers benefit from an array of financial services tailored to align with their religious principles. Congratulations to NBC for this initiative,” he pointed out.

In his remarks, Mr. Sabi acknowledged the importance of Ramadan as a fundamental pillar of Islamic faith—a month dedicated to worship, compassion, and charity.
He expressed that the bank embraces this period as an opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to its customers and all relevant stakeholders, including government entities, in a spirit of shared blessings.
“I am sincerely grateful to each of you for your continued trust in NBC as your financial partner. We pledge to enhance our services, including the provision of Riba-free accounts that comply with Sharia principles to cater to your banking needs. I also invite you to take advantage of our enhanced ‘NBC Kiganjani’ service, which offers mobile banking solutions,” he added.
Expounding on the NBC Kiganjani service, he explained, “Through NBC Kiganjani, customers can now conveniently self-open accounts, make government payments (GEPG), purchase prepaid electricity (LUKU), and execute payments using NBC Lipa Namba and the new Edu-Connect service for tuition fee payments.”
The event culminated in the presentation of gifts to attendees, creating a festive atmosphere. For NBC’s Muslim customers in Dar es Salaam, this occasion was a meaningful opportunity to celebrate together while strengthening their bond with the bank.
