THE outgoing Chairman of Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) Chris Martin has been elected the director of Africa Region 4 Golf Championship.
Martin has been handed the new roles during the Annual Meeting of the Africa Golf Confederation (AGC) held in Cairo, Egypt on Thursday.
He has become the first Tanzanian to hold such a big post at the regional level event and will oversee the office for a four-year period.
Speaking to the ‘Daily News’ from Egypt after being elected, Martin thanked the members for believing in him and giving him an opportunity to serve the body for the first time.
“It is great role with big responsibilities, but it is a great honour to me and Tanzania,” he said.
However, Martin who has vast experience in golf leadership, said he is ready to serve the region and push forward the development agenda from where his successor Kenyan Anthony Mirage ended.
Region 4 has 15 countries which are Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti, Sudan, South Sudan, Burundi, Comoro, Reunion, Mauritius, Seychelles and Madagascar.
But, Martin has a tough task to bring together the region whose most countries are not active when it comes to the Region 4 competition’s participation.
Only six countries Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania have been active and regular participants in the annual competition that this year was held in Uganda and saw Kenyans emerge victors.
Martin has recently decided not to defend his title at the coming TGU general, but he insists he will work together and support the new office bearers.
The annual meeting was held during the 2022 All Africa Challenge Trophy tournament.
Martin said they were expected to send a team to the Egypt battle but financial constraints denied them an entry.
