AFRICA IS WATCHING: Road to AFCON 2027 starts now

DAR ES SALAAM: AFRICA is watching. And we are hosting. 42 players called. Ghana lined up. Nigeria waiting in the group. Tanzania isn’t fighting to get to AFCON 2027. We’re fighting to be ready for it.

That’s the mood around Taifa Stars as Miguel Ángel Gamondi dropped his bumper provisional squad for the AFCON 2027 qualifiers. On paper, it’s GuineaBissau on September 23, then Madagascar on September 27.

In reality, it’s an audition. Let’s get the big one out of the way first: Tanzania have already qualified. As co-hosts with Kenya and Uganda, we’re going to AFCON 2027 no matter what happens in Group L with Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. That changes everything.

These aren’t do-or-die games. They are dress rehearsals. Gamondi knows it. That’s why he called 42 players. Azam FC bring nine. Simba bring seven. Yanga bring six.

The domestic core is strong because Gamondi needs to see who can handle Benjamin Mkapa Stadium when 60,000 people are expecting more than “good effort.” Rotation is coming. Experimentation is guaranteed. For once, a loss won’t trigger a crisis meeting. A win won’t save a campaign.

What matters is: who steps up? The biggest story isn’t the scoreline. It’s Bernard Kamungo. FC Dallas. MLS. Previously linked to the USA setup.

Now wearing Taifa Stars blue and yellow. He’s one of eleven attackers in the squad, but he brings something we haven’t had in a while: raw pace, directness and a profile that makes defenders in Europe and Africa take notice. Will he start vs GuineaBissau? Maybe. Should he? Absolutely. Gamondi has 18 months until AFCON kicks off.

He needs to know if Kamungo + Simon Msuva + Kelvin John can work together. Msuva scored the goal that took us to AFCON 2025. He’s still our proven finisher.

But Kamungo is the wildcard. Beating Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau is nice. But the game I have circled is Ghana. The Black Stars don’t come to Dar to make friends.

They come to test us physically, tactically and mentally. If our backline with Ibra Bacca and Vedastus Masinde can handle Ghana’s wingers, they can handle anyone in AFCON 2027.

That friendly is Gamondi’s lab. Expect different formations. Expect young legs. Expect mistakes. That’s the point.

Yes, Nigeria are favourites. Yes, Madagascar reached the 2019 quarter-finals. But we play with the mentality to win against them.

This is our chance to scout Nigeria up close before 2027. To see how we match up. To build a rivalry. To give Benjamin Mkapa a taste of continental heavyweights before the real tournament. The risk? Complacency.

“We’ve already qualified” can become an excuse. Gamondi’s job over the next year is to make sure these games still feel like finals to the players.

These matches aren’t about points. It’s about identity. Can Azam’s nine and Simba’s seven blend with our Europe/USA-based players? Can Kamungo be the X-factor? Can we use Ghana to measure ourselves honestly? AFCON 2027 is coming to us. We don’t need to qualify. We need to prepare. So, watch these two qualifiers differently.

Don’t count points. Count answers. Who nails down a starting spot? Who fades? Who rises when the pressure is low but the spotlight is on? Because in 2027, Africa won’t ask if Tanzania qualified. They’ll ask if Tanzania can compete.
