NEMC calls on residents to protect the Magufuli Bridge’s infrastructure

MWANZA: THE National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has urged residents in Mwanza region to protect the infrastructure of the  newly opened JP Magufuli Bridge since a worthy project.

Formerly known as Kigogo-Busisi ferry, JP Magufuli Bridge joins Misungwi and Sengerema districts of Mwanza Region.

The call was made by NEMC’s Executive Director, Dr. Immaculate Semesi, during the inauguration of the bridge. She took the opportunity to commend the Sixth Phase Government for completing this significant and strategic project.

The bridge connects Mwanza Region with the regions of Geita and Kagera, as well as neighboring countries including Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, and Democratic Republic of  Congo.

“This bridge is a major economic and social opportunity. We urge residents to protect the environment by avoiding the careless disposal of solid waste and wastewater, and by maintaining a distance of 60 meters from the lakeshore for any form of use,” said Dr. Semesi.

For his part, the NEMC Lake Zone Manager, Mr. Jerome Kayombo, emphasized the importance of conducting Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for all projects being implemented near the lake.

He explained that this step is crucial in safeguarding the life and ecosystem of Lake Victoria for the benefit of both the current and future generations.

Meanwhile, residents of Maswa District in Simiyu Region have been urged to prepare for and take advantage of the opportunities arising from ongoing infrastructure developments in the district, including the modern Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), which will operate from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza.

This infrastructure is expected to bring significant prospects for economic growth and development across the Lake Zone community.
