TANESCO orders customers to settle electricity bills promptly

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has called on its customers across the country to settle their electricity debts—whether from prepaid or postpaid services—in a bid to improve the quality and reliability of power supply for the benefit of national development.

The call was made today in Dar es Salaam by TANESCO’s Acting Director of Communications, Irene Gowele, during the official launch of a new nationwide campaign titled “Settle Your Debt, Protect Infrastructure, Let Us Serve You.” The campaign aims to promote debt repayment and protect electricity infrastructure throughout the country.

Speaking to members of the press, Ms. Gowele stated that the campaign takes effect immediately and will run for a period of six months as part of TANESCO’s ongoing efforts to enhance service delivery to all customers.

“The main goal of this campaign is to encourage our customers to pay their outstanding electricity bills. We have two types of customers: those who pay before using electricity (prepaid), and those who use first and pay later (postpaid). The biggest challenge lies with the latter group, especially medium and large-scale customers, who owe substantial amounts,” Gowele said.

She further explained that these debts have become a major burden for the company, affecting its operations and hindering efforts to efficiently expand and maintain the electricity infrastructure.

To support the success of the campaign, TANESCO has introduced a special six-month window of interest waiver to make it easier for defaulters to clear their outstanding bills without the added burden of penalties.

“This interest waiver is temporary but part of a broader, long-term approach. For customers with long-standing debts, we are offering a repayment arrangement of up to ten years to manage their arrears in a mutually agreed manner,” she added.

TANESCO has urged all customers to take advantage of this voluntary opportunity before stricter enforcement measures are considered to ensure that power services remain accessible, sustainable, and of high quality across the country.
