40 coaches selected for prestigious IHF C Licence course

DAR ES SALAAM: IN a major boost for handball development in Tanzania, 40 handball coaches from across the country have been officially selected to take part in the International Handball Federation (IHF) C Licence coaching course.

The intensive coaching programme, organised in collaboration between the IHF and the Tanzania Handball Association (TAHA), scheduled to run from July 23 to 30 this year at Filbert Bayi School in Kibaha in Coast Region, marks a significant step in raising the bar for handball coaching and nurturing the sport’s long-term growth nationwide.

“This course is more than just a certification, it’s a strategic investment in the future of Tanzanian handball and it targets coaches who have already acquired the IHF D Licence and are ready to take their expertise to the next level,” said Chairman of TAHA’s Technical Committee, Emmanuel Majura.

According to Majura, the selection process was highly competitive. All applicants were required to submit their professional CVs for evaluation by the IHF, which carefully vetted each submission to identify the most qualified candidates.

“Out of the applicants, 40 were selected purely on merit, while 10 others didn’t meet the criteria this time, hence remain for consideration in the upcoming training opportunities,” he confirmed.

The course will be led by Tarek Lofty, a distinguished IHF instructor from Egypt, renowned for his global experience in coach education and handball development.

Assisting him will be Tanzania’s very own Omary Kiama, a respected handball expert who will provide valuable local context and mentorship throughout the programme.

“The IHF C Licence course is designed to deepen both the technical and tactical understanding of the sport,” Majura explained.

“Beyond personal development, it will elevate coaching standards across Tanzania— impacting handball from grassroots to elite levels.”

The initiative comes at a time when handball is experiencing a surge in popularity across Tanzania, particularly among youths in schools and community clubs.

TAHA believes that enhancing coaching quality is key to maintaining that momentum and building a robust sports ecosystem.

“With programmes like this, we are laying the foundation for future champions and creating a culture of coaching excellence,” Majura said.

“This is how we build a lasting legacy for Tanzanian handball.”
