Dr Mpango off to Italy for EU Global Gateway summit

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIAN Vice President Dr. Philip Mpango, departed the country today for Rome, Italy, where he will represent President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the Development Partnership Summit between Africa and Italy (Mattei Plan), as well as the European Union’s Global Gateway Initiative, scheduled for June 20, 2025.

This high-level summit aims to discuss and strengthen development cooperation among Africa, the Italian Government, and the European Union. Through these engagements, Tanzania is expected to benefit from various development projects financed by international partners.

The Mattei Plan, spearheaded by the Government of Italy, focuses on fostering economic, social, and infrastructure development across African nations. Meanwhile, the EU Global Gateway is a strategic initiative by the European Union aimed at improving infrastructure in digital connectivity, energy, transportation, health, education, and research.

 The program targets investments worth €300 billion by 2027, with €150 billion specifically allocated to Africa.

While in Rome, Dr. Mpango is expected to participate in a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings intended to deepen development cooperation between Tanzania and other participating nations and organizations.

At Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, Dr. Mpango was seen off by the Italian Ambassador to Tanzania, Giuseppe Coppola, alongside other senior government officials.

Tanzania continues to elevate its role on global development platforms, aligning with the Sixth Phase Government’s agenda of expanding investment opportunities and accelerating socioeconomic transformation for its citizens.
