Mama Samia Legal Aid campaign reaches 3,195,403 Tanzanians

DODOMA: MINISTER of State in the President’s Office (Public Service Management and Good Governance) George Simbachawene has commended the Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign for deepening access to justice and fostering social harmony across the country.
The legal aid campaign has served over 3 million Tanzanians so far.
Speaking after touring the Ministry of Constitution and Legal Affairs pavilion at the ongoing Public Service Week exhibitions here, Mr Simbachawene said the campaign had “opened the doors of justice” to citizens who previously could not afford legal services.
“I commend the ministry for effectively rolling out Mama Samia’s Legal Aid Campaign. It has resolved disputes, promoted peace and built an inclusive society,” he noted. “Wherever there is peace and visible development, this campaign has brought joy and stability.”
Figures released by the ministry show that, as of 15 June 2025, the campaign had reached 3,195,403 people nationwide. On the Mainland, 2,772,495 citizens—1,381,960 men and 1,390,535 women—benefited, while 422,908 people—215,723 men and 209,185 women—were served in Zanzibar.
During the same period, the initiative handled 26,048 legal disputes, of which 25,299 originated from Mainland Tanzania and 749 from Zanzibar.
Director of Policy and Planning in the ministry, Mr Mbaraka Stambuli, said preparations for the second phase were under way.
“Legal matters are continuous,” he observed. “Our goal is to reach even more citizens. No Tanzanian should be denied their rights due to financial constraints.”
He explained that services focus on low income earners, offering free consultations, mediation and legal education to ease the burden on formal courts.
On Monday, 16 June 2025, the ministry launched a 10 day legal aid drive in Dar es Salaam, covering every district and ward. Mobile teams are providing on site advice, drafting legal documents and referring complex cases to appropriate forums.
State Attorney Athuman Msosole said a fully fledged Customer Service Centre is also handling walk in complaints and tracking cases to ensure timely resolution.

“This centre is crucial in making sure no citizen is left behind in accessing justice,” he stressed.
The Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign—an initiative of President Samia Suluhu Hassan—aims to entrench human rights and underscore that justice is a right, not a privilege.
