Tanzania sees completion of JP Magufuli Bridge

MWANZA: IT is milestone as Tanzania announced a completion of a 3km- JP Magufuli Bridge that connects the country with neighbours; Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
It was announced here today, May 19, 2025, that President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to grace the official inauguration of the bridge popularly known as Kigongo–Busisi on June 19 this year.
The bridge spans 3 kilometers, along with 1.66 kilometers of connecting roads.
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa announced the completion of the bridge today after touring the completed bridge.
He said the JP Magufuli Bridge is the longest in the East and Central African region.
“Prepare in large numbers to welcome our Head of State when she comes to inaugurate this bridge on June 19, 2025,” said Prime Minister Majaliwa during the site visit.

Minister of Works, Abdallah Ulega, noted that the completion of the bridge is a significant achievement under the leadership of the Sixth Phase Government led by President Samia. He revealed that the bridge was constructed entirely with over 700bn/- from domestic funding, marking it as one of the most historic infrastructure projects in the country.
Ulega further explained that the bridge connects the towns of Kigongo and Busisi across Lake Victoria, the third-largest lake in the world, significantly improving transport and boosting economic activities in Tanzania’s Lake Zone regions.
In addition, he assured residents of Sengerema District that the government will continue with the construction of key tarmac roads, including the Sengerema–Nyehunge (54.5 km) and Kamanga–Sengerema (32 km) routes, to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic development in the area.
The inauguration of the JP Magufuli Bridge is expected to be a landmark national event, showcasing the government’s commitment to strengthening transport infrastructure and accelerating social and economic progress across the country.
