ILO hails AI technology for ensuring safe, healthy workplaces

SINGIDA: THE Resident Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO) for the East Africa Region, Caroline Mugalla, has stated that the ILO’s 2025 report on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technology to enhance workplace safety and health shows that the application of this technology significantly reduces workplace accidents and diseases.

Caroline made these remarks while presenting the ILO’s message today, April 28, 2025, in Singida during the commemoration of the International Day of Safety and Health at Work.

However, Caroline also warned about the risks associated with these developments, including the potential loss of certain jobs. According to the report, approximately 75 million jobs worldwide could be eliminated due to technological advancements, while over 427 million jobs are expected to be improved due to AI.

She mentioned that the ILO will continue to collaborate with governments, workers, and employers to implement decent work programs. Among these initiatives is the process of ratifying ILO conventions, including the Fundamental Convention No. 155 and Convention No. 187 on Occupational Safety and Health.
