Airtel Tanzania honoured for economic, digital growth

DAR ES SALAAM: AIRTEL Tanzania has been recognised for its significant contributions to the country’s economic growth and digital transformation during the Government Minority Interest Directors Forum 2025.
The forum, organised by the Office of the Treasury Registrar, was held at the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Leadership School and brought together key stakeholders from the government and private sector to discuss sustainable development strategies.
Officiating the event, Minister for Planning and Investment, Prof. Kitila Mkumbo, commended minority interest companies, including Airtel Tanzania, for their role in strengthening the economy and supporting government revenue growth.
“I commend the Office of the Treasury Registrar for organising this important forum and extend my appreciation to all partners, including Airtel Tanzania, for their support. This event underscores the importance of strategic collaboration between the government and private sector in fostering economic transformation,” said Prof. Mkumbo.
The minister further highlighted that dividends from minority interest companies had surged from 58bn/- in 2019/20 to 195bn/- in 2023/24, reflecting a remarkable growth of over 200 per cent. Collectively, these 17 minority interest entities now contribute nearly 33 per cent of the government’s annual dividends.
Prof. Mkumbo also reiterated that Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050 places the private sector at the core of the country’s economic ambitions.
Airtel Tanzania Managing Director, Mr. Charles Kamoto, who participated as a panel speaker, expressed gratitude for the recognition and the opportunity to engage in discussions on economic development.

Mr. Kamoto highlighted Airtel Tanzania’s continued investments in network infrastructure and technology, noting that the company had invested over 650bn/- in the past five years to expand coverage and improve customer experience.
“In 2024 alone, we allocated 130bn/- towards infrastructure expansion, spectrum acquisition, and advanced technology deployment. This investment reaffirms our commitment to enhancing connectivity while ensuring sustainable returns for investors,” he added.
Airtel Tanzania’s Director of Business Enterprise, Mr. Joseph Muhere, also stressed the need for continuous engagement between the government and private sector to advance Tanzania’s development agenda.
“These collaborative engagements are essential for aligning on key areas of growth. By fostering stronger partnerships, we can drive innovation, enhance investment opportunities, and develop sustainable solutions that contribute to Tanzania’s long-term economic success,” he noted.
