ARUSHA: DEPUTY Prime Minister and Energy Minister, Dr Dotto Biteko said the Julius Nyerere Hydro Power Plant project was complete by March 22 this year.
The Deputy PM revealed about the completion of the major hydropower project during a CCM Parents Wing’s meeting in Arusha on Sunday, March 23 this year.
Dr Biteko clarified that by March 22, 2025, the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Hydro Power Project will be completed as machine number 9 has officially been handed over.

Regarding the power sector, Dr. Biteko noted that high electricity demand has increased from 1,470 megawatts to 1,908 megawatts.
In retrospect, an International study by the International Energy Agency (IEA) has revealed that 30 percent of electricity is lost due to poor energy consumption, particularly in households.
These figures were provided by Dr Biteko who urged the council members to serve as ambassadors in promoting clean cooking energy across the country.
Dr. Biteko explained how electricity is wasted unnecessarily, stating: “You find someone in the kitchen, the television is running in the lounge, the fan is on but not used, the air conditioner is operating in the bedroom—everything is left running without being turned off.”
