Dar es Salaam city council signs key contracts

DODOMA: THE Dar es Salaam City Council on Tuesday, signed three contracts aimed at improving public services and the safety of the city’s residents.

The projects include the installation of security cameras (CCTVs) in Kariakoo Market, the completion of Bonyokwa Secondary School and the handover of five garbage collection trucks.

Speaking at the event, Ilala District Commissioner, Mr Edward Mpogolo, urged the contractors who won the projects to work efficiently, manage them properly and ensure they are completed on time to bring development to the nation.

He also called on financial institutions to lend contractors modern, cleaning equipment to improve sanitation in markets and the city in general.

Mr Mpogolo also urged building owners in Kariakoo to install lights on their buildings to support the council’s lighting system in enhancing security during night.

For his part, the Director of the Dar es Salaam City Council, Mr Elihuruma Mabelya, said the council administration will not tolerate contractors who delay the projects.

“We will not turn a blind eye to contractors who are negligent or delay these projects. We want to see implementation done quickly and to the required standards so that people get quality services,” noted Mr Mabelya.

He noted further that the installation of CCTV cameras in Kariakoo Market was an important step in strengthening the safety and security of traders and customers.

Mr Mabelya added that the market was a business hub in the city and the move is expected to help curb crimes and improve management of the area.

Explaining about the CCTV project, the Head of the ICT Unit of the Dar es Salaam City Council, Kitutu Mshana, said that in addition to the installation of cameras, where 40 cameras will be installed in the first phase, various systems will be installed to operate the cameras.

The project process will involve the installation/construction of Fibre Optic in the entire CBD area, Servers (with high capacity), construction/installation of the System in the Control Rooms (there are two control rooms).

Others are Networking, Modern Back up System, Earthworks and the First Phase will have 40 cameras installed along with supporting systems.

Alongside the contract, the City Council has entered into agreement with the Tanzania Electrical, Mechanical and Electronics Services Agency (TEMESA) on the same.

It has also signed a contract with Kajenjere Company for waste collection and another contract with Platinum firm for construction of Bonyokwa Secondary School.
