Two major soda ash factories underway

TANZANIA: TWO large soda ash factories are set to be established in Engaruka-Chini, Monduli, in the Arusha Region as the soda ash production project begins its implementation.

This was said on Thursday by Minister for Industry and Trade, Mr Seleman Jafo, during the launch of compensation payments for the soda ash project.

He said that the factories represent the first phase of the project and will serve as a foundation for future industrial development.

“The project aims to establish two large factories in the first phase, to serve as foundational industries that will stimulate other linked industries within this project,” noted Mr Jafo.

Minister Jafo said that Tanzania would make history with the project as it will be the first of its kind in soda ash production.

He said, “For many years, our country has been a major importer of this mineral for use in industries such as glassmaking, soap production, textiles and petroleum refining, but after the project’s implementation, we will no longer import soda ash from other countries.”

The President has allocated funds for compensation of 519 citizens and as of Wednesday, 50 among 599 have already received their payments and the rest will receive it not later than February 15 this year to enable them to start their new lives, as intended by the Head of State.

He said that President Samia Suluhu Hassan had shown commitment by allocating the funds to ensure that citizens are compensated, with the main goal being the successful implementation of the project while safeguarding the rights of the people.

“In the implementation of various development projects, the President’s priority has always been to consider the welfare of the people. I congratulate you because a substantial amount of money will be disbursed for compensation in the execution of this project.”

We have high expectations for Monduli District to undergo significant transformation, especially in the Engaruka area in terms of investment. I urge you to prepare for major changes in this area, which will become attractive and emerge as a business hub,” he added.

On his part, National Development Corporation (NDC) Managing Director, Dr Nicolous Shombe said that the project was a landmark as it surpasses other strategic projects in scale and significance as it integrates multiple sectors rather than focusing on a single one.

“ It is part of our five-year development plan and is aligned with the 46th clause of the CCM party manifesto, which emphasises creating an enabling environment for the implementation of the Engaruka project during the 2020–2025 period,” Dr Shombe said.

He said that they have trained the residents receiving compensation payments on possible ways to use and invest the money as they are receiving significant amounts.

Dr Shombe said that as agreed under the land law and the contract between them and the citizens, the people will vacate the area within 90 days so that when investors arrive, the area will be free from any conflicts.

The implementation of the project will lead to the availability of several key developments including the construction of 54km of roads to facilitate the movement of machinery, a water supply project to provide sufficient water for both the local population and industries and establishment of industrial-grade electricity supply of KV33 to support large-scale investments.
