‘Grab tournaments’ opportunities’

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIANS have been urged to grab to economic opportunities, presented by the upcoming tournament that kicks off in just a few weeks to come.

THE 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) Local Organising Committee Chairperson, Leodegar Tenga, said in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday that some of the opportunities are tourism activities, among many others.

Tenga emphasised the need for the nation and its citizens to take full advantage of the event that is set to run from February 1 to 28 and involves 19 countries, including host nations; Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Tenga highlighted that CHAN tournament will serve as a crucial stepping stone in Tanzania’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that the country will co-host.

“This tournament is not just about football. It’s a golden opportunity for us to boost our economy and showcase our nation to the world through various avenues, including tourism,” Tenga said.

The local organising committee is also gearing up to ensure that international visitors are immersed in Tanzania’s rich culture and tourist attractions.

“We have prepared brochures and guides that will inform our guests about the various tourist attractions across the country,” he added.

Tenga further expressed confidence that the country’s infrastructure preparations for the tournament have been progressing smoothly.

The government has invested heavily in renovating and upgrading key stadiums, including Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam and New Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar, ensuring they meet the necessary standards for the tournament.

“In line with CAF’s requirements, training grounds at Gymkhana, Law School and Meja General Isamuhyo have also been built to host the tournament’s training sessions.

“We are over 95 per cent ready and CAF officials have regularly inspected our facilities and expressed their satisfaction with our preparations. There are still a few things to finalise, but we are confident everything will be ready in time.” Tenga explained.

Tenga also emphasised the importance of local support for the tournament, calling on Tanzanians to rally behind the home team.

“This is a tournament for our children. It’s for our local players and we must give them all the encouragement they need,” he said.

To further energise the public ahead of the competition, a major sports stakeholders’ conference will take place today at the Johari Rotana Hall in Dar es Salaam, starting at 3 AM were Deputy Prime Minister, Doto Biteko will grace the event that  will provide more updates on the current status of preparations for the CHAN tournament.

“This tournament will not only showcase our football talent but will also bring tremendous economic benefits. Let’s be ready to take full advantage,” Tenga concluded.

The CHAN 2024 tournament will be a historic first for the Confederation of African Football (CAF), as it will be jointly hosted by three nations Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
