Over 9,000 factories set for establishment in five years

ARUSHA: THE Ministry of Industry and Trade plans to establish a total of 9,048 factories across the country with the potential to provide 6.4 million jobs within the next five, years starting 2025 to 2030 aiming to stimulate economic growth.

Minister for Industry and Trade, Dr Selemani Jafo, revealed the information on Thursday during the opening of a working session with Directors and Heads of Institutions under his ministry to discuss the budget and its priorities.

He said that the goal of establishing the industries was to drive employment growth, including creating opportunities for each region to develop small industries.

This initiative aims to provide job opportunities for young graduates from various colleges and schools, thereby contributing to regional economic growth.

“We need to engage with regional and district leaders to identify investment areas and business opportunities in each region. I call upon everyone to prioritise workers’ interests and ensure our institutions play a pivotal role in generating employment opportunities,” the minister said.

He further said the government’s warehouse receipt programme has led to an increase in the price of peas from 1600/- to 2200/- per kilogram in some regions such as of Lindi.

Dr Jafo stressed that the institutions under his ministry were working diligently to combat counterfeit products, which undermine investment in local factories and disrupt markets for domestically produced goods.

He said that the budget outlines a clear framework for the Ministry of Industry and Trade to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in fulfilling its responsibilities.

The Minister urged the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA) to expedite licensing processes through online systems and called on the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) to intensify efforts in combating smuggling across various parts of the country.
