MNH,council to provide eye health services

RUVUMA: THE Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), in collaboration with the Songea District Council, has launched an eye screening camp aimed at providing specialised eye care services to residents of the Ruvuma Region.
At the launch, Ruvuma Regional Medical Officer, Dr Louis Chomboko, expressed his gratitude to the leadership of MNH for recognising the critical need for these services and for sending experts to work alongside local health professionals.
He insisted that the initiative would greatly alleviate the burden on residents who previously had to travel long distances to access eye care services in other regions.
“We thank the government, under the leadership of President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, for bringing these services closer to the people. This not only reduces the high costs and time spent traveling to other regions but also ensures that residents can access quality eye health services regardless of their location,” said Dr Chomboko.
MNH Ophthalmology Specialist, Dr Joakim Kilemile, outlined the range of services being offered at the camp. They include screenings for various eye diseases, the provision of eyeglasses for those in need, and medication for patients diagnosed with eye conditions.
Dr Kilemile also stated that surgeries would be performed on-site for patients requiring immediate attention, while those needing more advanced care would be referred to appropriate facilities.

“For the first time, specialized services from MNH are now available in Songea. The residents of this region no longer need to travel far to access these essential services. We hope this initiative will significantly reduce eye health challenges and improve the overall eye health of the community,” Dr Kilemile remarked.
