Diva, Niffer arrested over Kariakoo disaster fundraising scandal

DAR ES SALAAM: The Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone has arrested two individuals in connection with unauthorized fundraising activities related to the recent Kariakoo building collapse.

The suspects, Diva Malinzi (36), a resident of Mikocheni, and Jenifer Bilikwija alias ‘Niffer’ (25), a resident of Salasala who was apprehended in Dodoma and transferred to Dar es Salaam, are accused of unlawfully collecting money under the pretext of disaster relief using personal bank accounts.

Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander Jumanne Muliro confirmed the arrests on Tuesday, stating that the suspects are under interrogation.

He explained that while the government and private sector are working tirelessly to rescue those trapped under the rubble; reports emerged of individuals exploiting the disaster to solicit funds illegally.

“The suspects are being thoroughly questioned. The police reiterate that we will not hesitate to take legal action against anyone who exploits disasters as an opportunity to profit,” Commander Muliro emphasized.

He added that the police are collaborating with other legal authorities to determine additional measures against the suspects.

Speaking on Monday during a farewell ceremony for the 16 victims of the Kariakoo building collapse, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa reiterated that the government has not authorized any private fundraising related to the incident.

He emphasized that donations should only be directed to an account established by the Disaster Management Committee under the Prime Minister’s Office.

To facilitate contributions, the government has set up a special National Relief Fund account at the Bank of Tanzania specifically for the Kariakoo tragedy.
