Women journalists association in Kagera launched

KAGERA: THE Women Journalists Association in Kagera (WJK) has been launched prioritising the fight against gender-based violence on children and women.
WJK Chairperson, Ms Stella Pantaleo explained that the main reason for establishing the association comprising about 21 women journalists was to spearhead the fight against increasing heinous acts facing children, girls and women.
“The formation of WJK comes amidst growing concerns about the alarming rise in sexual violence against children, girls and women. WJK has prioritised the fight against gender-based violence while members will use their pens to expose the heinous acts facing children and women,” she said.
From January to September 30th this year, Kagera police reported a total of 533 cases related to gender-based violence.
Head of the Gender Desk at the Kagera Regional Police Station, Assistant Inspector of Police Susan Kamwaga noted that approximately 230 of the cases were specifically related to rape.
“Tanzania has one of the youngest populations in the world and we are witnessing a troubling increase in gender-based violence. To tackle these challenges, we need concerted efforts from all stakeholders to address violence against children,” she said.

Ms Pantaleo highlighted that WJK will conduct regular sessions through local radios to educate the public on the evils of gender– violence while victims of rape will be assisted to get their rights.
She appealed to members of the public to coordinate by reporting acts related to gender-based violence for necessary action.
