Encourage youths to stay away from drug trafficking

TANZANIA: WE all know that advancements in technology have quickened information sharing and above all-market search for different products including the illicit ones, every government in existence is fighting.
In this area, Tanzania has also witnessed a troubling rise in drug trafficking and consumption, particularly among its youth.
As a nation poised for progress, it is crucial for our younger generation to recognise the detrimental consequences of engaging in or consuming illegal substances.
The stakes have never been higher, and the path forward must prioritise health, education and community resilience over the allure of quick financial gain.
We must time and again caution the youth that engaging in drug trafficking may seem appealing to some as a quick route to wealth, but the reality is far more harrowing.
The drug trade is not just illegal-it is dangerous. Young people involved in trafficking risk not only their freedom but also their lives.
The cycle of addiction, criminal activity and imprisonment creates a bleak future, trapping individuals in a web of despair that can extend to their families and communities.

Moreover, drug consumption poses severe health risks. Substance abuse can lead to addiction, mental health issues, and chronic health conditions that undermine a young person’s potential.
The long-term effects of drug use can derail educational pursuits and hinder career prospects, creating a cycle of poverty and dependence that is difficult to escape.
We should not take it for granted, because the impact of drug trafficking and consumption extends beyond individual consequences; it erodes the very fabric of our society.
Families suffer when their members fall prey to addiction, leading to breakdowns in trust, support, and care. This ripple effect can diminish community cohesion and weaken the support systems that are vital for collective progress.
As Tanzania grapples with these challenges, it is essential for our youth to understand their role in shaping a brighter future. By distancing themselves from drugs, they can become agents of change, advocating for healthier lifestyles and promoting positive social values.
Here, the key to steering youth away from drug trafficking and consumption lies in education and community engagement.
Educational institutions must prioritise drug awareness programs, informing students about the risks associated with drugs and providing them with the tools to resist peer pressure.
Workshops, counselling services and open discussions can empower young people to make informed choices. Furthermore, communities can foster youth engagement through sports, arts, and vocational programs that provide constructive outlets for creativity and energy.
By creating safe spaces for young people to explore their talents and passions, we can divert attention away from destructive behaviours and promote personal growth and fulfillment.
