Minister: We’re promoting tourism at 2024 show

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR Minister for Tourism and Heritage, Mudrik Ramadhan Soraga, has expressed the government’s commitment to making every effort to promote sustainable tourism.

He was speaking at Forodhani Public Leisure Park in Stone Town, ahead of the third edition of the Zanzibar Tourism and Investment Show, scheduled for October 25 and 26, this year.

At Forodhani, he showcased his skills in Makachu water sports, which involves jumping off the seawall in various styles, a popular activity among young boys at the park. Mr Soraga emphasised the government’s encouragement of creativity and innovation in attracting tourists.

Demonstrating his support, the Minister participated in Makachu and invited local and international companies to attend the upcoming tourism and investment show at the Nyamanzi Exhibition Centre.

“You are welcome to experience Zanzibar’s unique blend of sustainable tourism, heritage preservation and investment opportunities. This event reflects our dedication to balancing economic growth with environmental care and cultural authenticity,” Soraga stated.

He announced that President Hussein Mwinyi is expected to grace the event’s opening, further underscoring Zanzibar’s commitment to sustainable development and cultural preservation.

Mr Soraga pointed out the advantages of being close to the sea, emphasising its potential for promoting tourism, especially through water sports. He noted that the islands of Unguja and Pemba are rich in attractions, both tangible and intangible and that creativity is essential for maximising this potential.

“There are countries, including islands like Zanzibar, that successfully use their natural resources seas, rivers and lakes for tourism activities such as boat tours and excursions. While our beaches and historical sites continue to attract visitors, inventing new activities like sea sports can significantly increase tourist arrivals,” he said.

Regarding preparations for the tourism and investment show, Mr Soraga indicated that more than 250 investors, tour operators and other stakeholders are expected to participate, showcasing their products and services during the two-day event.

He outlined the exhibition’s main objectives: to promote Zanzibar as a key tourism destination, to connect industry stakeholders and to highlight available investment opportunities.

Rahma Sanya, Marketing Director at the Zanzibar Tourism Commission, noted that countries such as Oman, Qatar, South Korea, England, Germany, Indonesia and others from East Africa have confirmed their participation.

Local resident Abubakar Mussa Mohammed, a young diver from Shangani in Unguja, expressed his excitement about the Minister’s visit and affirmed their commitment to using the event to promote Zanzibar.

The exhibition is supported by various companies and institutions, including Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC), Azam Media, Mozeti Tours & Safaris, Zanzibar Drone, Com-net, Rahisi, Turaco, ASK B, Cocoon Collections, Prologic First, ZATI, ZATO, HAZ, ZNCC and other tourism stakeholders.
