Over 300 to climb Mount Kilimanjaro on Independency Day

KILIMANJARO: Tanzanians have been challenged to climb Africa’s rooftop as the country prepares to celebrate its 62nd anniversary.

An Assistant Conservation Commissioner with Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA), Angela Nyaki said there was much in store in this year’s Mount Climbing edition.

“This year’s expedition promises to be remarkable, with many locals expected to join us in scaling the summit,” she said.

According to the KINAPA official, the conservation agency projects to host 300 climbers as Tanzania marks its birthday on December 9, 2023.

Ms Nyami said the expedition sought to enhance environmental conservation and protection along the coastal region.

Uncontrolled harvesting of trees in the country’s coastal regions is reportedly dealing Mount Kilimanjaro a huge blow, as far as the conservation of Africa’s rooftop is concerned.

The conservation agency attributed firewood harvesting and charcoal production along the coastal regions to the alleged ice cap disappearance on Africa’s biggest peak.

Conservation experts have on several occasions warned that, Mount Kilimanjaro’s ice cap, which is also considered to be among world-famous glaciers, could melt by 2050 due to climate change.

Some studies have also shown the glacier has shrunk by 80 percent since the early 20th century.

Organized by KINAPA and other tour companies, the event will allow tour companies guiding tourists through distinct routes to conquer Africa’s highest peak.

Meanwhile, KINAPA reiterated that safety remains the number one priority as climbers brace the challenge.

This eight-day journey will lead participants through Shira, Kibo, and Mawenzi peaks, affording them breathtaking views of Africa’s rooftop.

In 1973, Mt Kilimanjaro became gazetted by the government as part of KINAPA.
