Mbeya opens new investment opportunities through PPP

MBEYA: THE Mbeya City Council has invited investors and private sector stakeholders to partner with the local authority in the construction of a modern abattoir at Ilemi through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.
Mbeya City Mayor Dormohamed Issa made the call on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, during the opening of a project introduction meeting aimed at presenting investment opportunities available under the proposed project.
The meeting brought together representatives from the Prime Minister’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG) and the Public-Private Partnership Centre (PPP Centre).
Speaking during the meeting, Mayor Issa said the project seeks to replace the existing abattoir, which no longer meets the required standards for modern meat processing and handling.
He said the proposed facility would ensure residents have access to clean, safe and thoroughly inspected meat while adding value to the livestock sector and improving the economic welfare of livestock keepers.
“The project will ensure that residents get clean and safe meat that has undergone thorough inspection, while adding value to the livestock sector and supporting the growth of livestock keepers’ economy,” he said.
Mayor Issa said the meeting was part of the city council’s efforts, in collaboration with PO-RALG, to identify capable and experienced investors willing to partner with the authority in implementing major strategic projects for the benefit and development of residents.
He called on potential investors to use the meeting as an opportunity to present their views, recommendations and technical advice on the proposed project, including its structure, investment capacity, distribution of responsibilities and sustainable management arrangements.
The mayor said the council was ready to engage investors in exploring the best approaches to implementing and operating the modern abattoir to ensure its long-term sustainability and contribution to the city’s economic development.
He added that the PPP arrangement would provide an opportunity for the private sector to contribute its expertise, financial resources and operational capacity towards improving infrastructure and service delivery in the city.
The proposed project is expected to strengthen meat inspection and processing services while creating opportunities for investment and supporting the development of the livestock value chain in Mbeya.
