Yas donation boosts maternity care in Pemba

PEMBA: Expectant mothers receiving care at Wete District Hospital in Kinyasini, Pemba, are set to benefit from improved maternity services following a donation of medical equipment and essential supplies by Yas Tanzania.

The donation, made through the company’s employee-led Tumaini campaign, includes delivery beds, hospital beds, wheelchairs, bedsheets and kangas for expectant and new mothers.

The support is expected to improve the hospital’s capacity to serve women during childbirth while complementing the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar’s efforts to strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare.

One of the beneficiaries, Fatma Juma Hamad, welcomed the donation, saying the support would improve conditions for women receiving maternity services at the facility. She also encouraged other companies to contribute towards improving healthcare services.

Another expectant mother, Raya Seif Abdalla, said the new equipment would help the hospital provide better care to women visiting the facility for delivery.

Receiving the donation, Wete District Commissioner Abdalla Rashid Ali commended Yas Tanzania and its employees for supporting the hospital, noting that the equipment would help address some of the challenges facing maternity services.

“Beyond providing telecommunications services, you have another side that many people may not know about. Today you have shown it by donating essential items to our hospital, particularly for maternity care,” he said.

Mr Ali described the employees’ contribution as an investment in people’s lives and urged hospital management and staff to ensure the donated equipment was properly maintained and used for its intended purpose.

Yas Head of Region for Zanzibar, Mr Mohamed Waqid, said the Tumaini campaign was initiated by employees who wanted to support women facing challenges when accessing maternity services.

“The Tumaini campaign is special because the idea came from our employees, who were moved by the challenges women face when they arrive at hospitals to give birth,” he said.

Mr Waqid also commended the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar under President Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi for its efforts to improve healthcare services, particularly for expectant mothers.

He said the donation reflected Yas Tanzania’s commitment to supporting communities beyond its core telecommunications business.

Through the initiative, the company and its employees are contributing to efforts to improve healthcare conditions and support mothers during one of the most important stages of their lives.
