GGML joins JKCI in Charity Walk to support paediatric cancer care
DAR ES SALAAM: SUPPORT for children living with cancer received a boost as hundreds of participants joined the AmCham Tanzania Family Charity Walk in Dar es Salaam on 20 September 2026. The walk mobilised private-sector and community support for Tumaini la Maisha, which provides care to children with cancer and their families.
Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) was among the main sponsors of the event. The company partners with the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute ( JKCI) to support access to cardiac surgery for children and has identified the health and wellbeing of communities as a core element of its sustainability and community investment strategy.

“GGML’s purpose is to empower people and advance societies, and that purpose cannot be realised without investing in the health of the current and incoming generation,” said Simon Shayo, Vice President for Sustainability and Stakeholder Engagement at AngloGold Ashanti Tanzania and AmCham Board Member.
“Initiatives like this one reflect an essential tenet of sustainability and of a future-focused nation and business environment. The theme of this walk, One Walk. One Cause, reminds us that collective action can turn individual contributions into meaningful impact.”
Andrew Lentz, Chargé d’Affaires at the United States Embassy in Dar es Salaam, addressed participants at the event and emphasised the scale of collective effort required to advance Tumaini la Maisha’s mission.
“The only way we are going to be able to make Tumaini la Maisha’s vision come to life, that no child suffers or dies unnecessarily, is if we all contribute,” Lentz said. “It is going to take all of us.”
Benedict Busunzu, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Tembo Nickel and AmCham Tanzania Board Chair, thanked the organisations that made the walk possible. “We are grateful to every sponsor who contributed to AmCham’s drive to support Tumaini la Maisha,” he said.
The walk is part of a wider effort to mobilise private sector and civil society support for paediatric cancer care in Tanzania, where access to treatment remains limited for many families. Tumaini la Maisha provides services to children with cancer and their families, working to ensure that a diagnosis does not become a death sentence due to lack of resources or access to care.
