Tanzania cements ties with Egypt currently with 61 projects in the country worth 1.5bn US dollars
NEW YORK: TANZANIA and Egypt have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation in trade, investment, infrastructure, education, healthcare and international affairs.
Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Dr Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, made the remarks during a meeting with Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriate Affairs, Dr Badr Abdelatty, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.
Kombo stressed the importance of increasing trade and investment between the two countries, noting that Egypt currently has 61 investment projects in Tanzania worth approximately 1.5bn US dollars. The projects span several sectors and have created 5,364 jobs.
On strategic cooperation, Kombo highlighted Tanzania’s appreciation of the contribution made by Egyptian companies to major development projects in the country, particularly the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, which has an installed generation capacity of 2,115 megawatts.
The project was implemented by Egyptian companies and was inaugurated on August 22, 2026.
The two countries have also agreed to strengthen cooperation in key social and economic sectors, including education, healthcare, agriculture, water and technology.

As part of the education partnership, Egypt has committed to providing 10 scholarship opportunities through the Samia Scholarship programme. In healthcare, more than 420 Tanzanians with serious heart conditions have benefited from surgical services provided through medical camps conducted by Egyptian doctors in Tanzania.
For his part, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to continuing cooperation with Tanzania in economic, social, diplomatic and international affairs, with the aim of advancing the interests of the people of both countries.
