Tanzania cherishes young scientist awards for promoting skills-based education in its 103 vocational schools

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, has said awards recognising young scientists are supporting government efforts to strengthen skills-based education and establish more than 103 vocational schools across the country.
Prof. Shemdoe made the remarks on September 17, 2026, at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) Library Hall after touring an exhibition of research projects and innovations developed by young scientists from various secondary schools across Tanzania.
During the event, the minister presented awards to students who excelled in research and innovation projects covering areas such as innovation, science, agriculture, energy, environment and health.
He said the awards programme, organised by Young Scientist Tanzania, is in line with the Sixth-Phase Government’s efforts, under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, to strengthen technical and skills education through the establishment of vocational schools.
According to Prof. Shemdoe, the schools are intended to equip students with practical knowledge and skills that can directly connect them with employment and self-employment opportunities.

“I believe the research and innovations I have seen here are the kind of initiatives that should be given priority in implementing the Education and Training Policy of 2014, 2023 edition, as well as the improved curriculum,” he said.
He added that exposing students to research and innovation would enable them to apply knowledge acquired in school to address various challenges and establish income-generating activities after completing their studies.
Prof. Shemdoe further said the awards support the implementation of the Samia Scholarship programme, which seeks to support high-performing students in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation.
He said nurturing and developing students’ talent in these fields was important for building a skilled workforce and strengthening Tanzania’s capacity to use science, technology and innovation to drive economic and social development.
